The main requirements are dryness to prevent mould and fungi, airtightness to protect against pests and oxidation, and temperature control without sudden changes.
For dry bulk feed (mixed fodder, grain), silos are best suited, especially fibreglass silos, which are rust-free, have smooth walls and offer excellent protection.
It is convenient to store bagged feed, hay and root crops in warehouses or sheds where ventilation is important. For wet feeds (silage, haylage), trench pits or wrapping the bales in foil are used to create anaerobic conditions for fermentation.
Regardless of the method chosen, regular inspection and adherence to the “first in, first out” rule is required to minimise losses and ensure quality animal feed.
